Digital media project week 7: Research methods and ethics

Quick question:

How many sources do we need for the literature review?

-Include a handful of sources and cross refenrence each in your paragraphs

-Send a paragraph to your supervisor so that they can check if it needs more sources or if it hits the mark

Qualitive research methods:

-generally, isung non-numerical data
-to understand the world - phenomenom, experiences, or developments
-examining underpinning meanings
-tends to be more detailed, interview will be more long
-gives data on a more local area

Research ethics:
-Working with live social media data/ in research take steps to get concent when using social media and peoples posts/ stay within apps terms and conditions and also the unis ethics

You Must:
-Check terms and conditions of platforms
-Either anonymise or pseudonymise data or get informed concent from a creator
-Avoid users being identifiable through collected data (avoid direct quotes)
-collect only essentially data/ have to collect the right ammount of posts for your study
-Save all data on One drive

Ethnography and auto ethnography:
-Ethnography is about describing, analysing, and emmerce yourself in the lives, sociol worlds, and or culture of a group of people
-Very deep and rich and contextualised.
-Emmercing yourself in the enviroment that you are researching
-Better than interviews itself because you also gain experience
-use reddit for research and "lurk"

Auto ethnograpghy:💚
-In the community that I am interested in
-Hve dialogue with people other that myself (Interviews)
-Writing uses data from a persons own life experience
-For my research/ participant observation (Only use spotifys curated playlists for a month and see how it changes your music taste) (This could link to your video essay and work really well)
-Emotive/ Emphasis on creative and emotive storytelling
-Critical/ Focus on challenging power dynamics and political potential
-Analytical/ cohesion with more traditional qualitive research methods
-Collect notes
-Journalling, field notes, use existing data, documents
-Italicised personal narratives in my writing and follow that up with more traditional acedmic writing (say why)
-first person pronoun
-own experiences as data

How I would do this:

-Create a fresh spotify account
-Listen to music only reccomended by spotify for a month
-Record my experiences through video and writing
-My acedemic writing will be analytical
-My video essay will be a dramatised, emotive version of this and feature creative story telling

This is a similar experiment to what I wanna do

Music discovery research is key for this.

Creative and visual methods:
-doing stuff that is non-tradtional as a way to explore something
-Run a creative workshop with a focus group
-Example/ AUSTRALIA banning smartphones for under 18s/ run a creative activety with a group of young teens in which they draw their feelings and describe their reasons (these are called zines)
-Analyse experience through what people create
